We all like nice things. Sadly, stylish outfits often come at a high price not only for us but the planet as well. The global fashion industry accounts for 1.7 billion of CO2 annually. Driving the greenhouse gas emissions is the fast fashion industry, which sacrifices sustainability for speed and lower prices. Because these clothes are so cheap, we often wear them only once if ever at all. In the US, 10.5 million tones of clothes end up in landfills every year. As a person who cares a lot about the environment and still wants to look fashionable, I find shopping very difficult to navigate. Fortunately, sustainable fashion companies make this process significantly easier.
Sustainable fashion refers to garments that are ethically manufactured with a minimal negative impact on the environment. It means that employees earn fair wages, there is little to no toxic chemicals used during dyeing, and all fabrics are sourced from natural materials or sustainable alternatives. This complex approach to production is what makes sustainable fashion so great.
Contrary to some misconceptions, sustainable clothing is usually stylish and trendy. My sister, who is a stylist and who lives and breathes fashion, is a big proponent of these companies. So here some tips that will help to make your wardrobe more sustainable.
Learn about the company before you buy
Many brands market themselves as sustainable, but it is often lots of greenwashing. To say that a company is truly eco-friendly, it should follow standards that I mentioned earlier. For a great way to better understand these guidelines and how it is possible to implement them in practice, check out our episodes with Daywear Lab and Laws of Motion. Both of them produce fashionable and environmentally friendly clothing.
Try to avoid fast fashion.
I’m not trying to suggest that you permanently boycott Zara or Forever 21… but when you shop in fast-fashion retailers, purchase consciously, and wear these items, though they aren’t meant to last long. Sustainable fashion is built to last and is better for our planet. Plus, sustainable fashion are innovative and are doing amazing things like creating tee shirts made from milk!
Give your clothes a second life.
Most of us have items in our closet that are long outdated or that we just never wear. With a little bit of research and imagination, it is easy to make most of these clothes. I’m always amused when my sister creates a trendy look using my father’s shirt or her school uniform.
Swap with friends or donate
Don’t just throw away your clothes. Many garments are made out of synthetic materials that take hundreds of years to decompose. Instead, throw a clothing swap party with friends or donate to those in need. Donating your clothes is a great way to support local charities and help people who need it most.
Go for thrift shopping
You will be surprised by your amazing finds when you go shopping at a thrift store. You can find unique things that you can either resell for more, which has become popular, or just save money and come away with unique pieces for your wardrobe.
